Results of the DiViD study

Researchers from Oslo Diabetes Research Center today present the results of the DiVID study at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Hamburg.

PhD student Ida Maria Mynarek presented the results on behalf of the research group led by prof.em. Knut Dahl Jørgensen and senior researcher Lars Krogvold. This study is unique in its character as it shows for the first time that antiviral treatment early after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes may help protect the insulin producing beta-cells.

The study was simultaneously published in the high-ranked medical journal Nature Medicine, were the authors conclude that “The results show that antiviral treatment may preserve residual insulin production in children and adolescent with new-onset T1D. This provides a rationale for further evaluating antiviral strategies in the prevention and treatment of T1D”
