Diabetes Research Awards

At the upcoming annual conference of the Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes (SSSD), several awards will be presented to recognize outstanding contributions to diabetes research. The event will bring together leading scientists from across the Nordic region and beyond, for three days of scientific exchange and celebration.

Knut Dahl-Jørgensen will receive the Novo Nordisk Foundation Lecture Prize at the SSSD conference.

Novo Nordisk Foundation Nordic Diabetes Prize: Knut Dahl-Jørgensen

Professor, and former head of Oslo Diabetes Research centre, Knut Dahl-Jørgensen of the University of Oslo will receive the Novo Nordisk Foundation Nordic Diabetes Prize for his contributions to diabetes research. He will give his prize lecture entitled: “Virus as cause of type 1 diabetes”.

The prize, established in 1979 and originally known as the Jacob E. Poulsen Grant, is awarded to an active scientist from a Nordic country for outstanding achievements in diabetes research or treatment. The recipient is invited to give a lecture at the SSSD annual conference.

Johnny Ludvigsson Prize: Kailash Singh

Kailash Singh from Uppsala University will be awarded the Johnny Ludvigsson Prize given to young Swedish Diabetes researchers for Outstanding Research in Childhood and Adolescent Diabetes. His lecture, titled “IL-35 in focus: A New Frontier in Type 1 Diabetes Therapy”, is scheduled for August 22 and will explore novel therapeutic approaches targeting immune regulation in type 1 diabetes.

SSSD Young Investigator Award: Karl Sebastian Johansson

Karl Sebastian Johansson of Copenhagen University Hospital will receive the SSSD Young Investigator Award for his research on medication use and polypharmacy in type 2 diabetes. His presentation, “Increasing Medication Use and Polypharmacy in Type 2 Diabetes: The Danish Experience From 2000 to 2020”, will be held on August 22.

Knud Lundbeck Award: Per Henrik Groop

Professor Per Henrik Groop of the University of Helsinki will be honoured with the Knud Lundbeck Award on August 23 in recognition of his significant contributions to diabetes research. He has started and developed the large FINDIANE study where more than 5000 individuals with type 1 diabetes are included, and this work has advanced the understanding of diabetes complications and continues to influence clinical practice.

Best Abstract Award

A Best Abstract Award will also be presented during the conference on August 24. The recipient has not yet been announced, but the award highlights excellence in scientific communication among submitted abstracts.
