Genetics and epigenetics of type 1 diabetes - Benedicte Lie
Current research focus
Epigenetic changes (heritable information not encoded in our DNA) may be underlie the onset of human diseases such as diabetes. I am studying epigenetic changes in white blood cells from identical twins (genetically identical, but potentially EPIgenetically different) discordant for disease. The aim is to find epigenetic differences that might explain the onset of disease in one twin. In particular, I am focusing on modifications of the histone proteins that package our DNA.
