Early atherosclerosis in childhood onset diabetes

In his doctoral thesis defended in June Martin Heier has compared children with and without type 1 diabetes ( T1D ) for early risk factors for the development of early atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the main cause of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Hanna Dis Margeirsdottir in the same research group has shown that children with T1D already at 13 years of age have more pronounced atherosclerosis than healthy peers. Heier has found increased inflammation and increased levels of advanced glycation endproducts in diabetic children compared to healthy peers, factors that may contribute to premature atherosclerosis.
